The Australia Vietnam Policy Institute (AVPI), in collaboration with RMIT University's Centre for Urban Research, hosted this workshop on 18 May 2023.

The RMIT-AVPI Smart and Sustainable Cities workshop brought together industry professionals, academics and researchers to discuss current trends and challenges as well as key issues and emerging themes for smart and sustainable cities in Viet Nam with the aim to identify future directions for joint Australia-Vietnam collaborative partnerships.

This workshop reflected on RMIT’s Urban Research Centre’s visit to Vietnam in February 2023, in which they engaged with external partners in the Asia Pacific and RMIT Vietnam researchers on joint research opportunities. The discussion reflected on a draft AVPI Policy Briefing on this topic, and the conversations and emerging themes helped to inform the final Briefing. The Policy Briefing supports AVPI’s purpose to inform engagement between Australia and Vietnam.

The main objectives of the workshop were to capture any further trends, challenges and emerging themes needing to be addressed in the AVPI Policy Briefing and identify future directions and opportunities for joint Australia-Vietnam collaborative partnerships.

Drawing on the visit to Vietnam, the workshop and a desktop review of smart and sustainable cities in Vietnam, this policy brief will illustrates the current trends, challenges, and opportunities for smart and sustainable cities in Vietnam. The report is contextualised by rapid urbanisation, continued positive economic development and the ongoing development of (disruptive) digital technologies, and overarched by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda and the UN’s National Urban Policy Programme. The report sets an agenda for potential collaboration between Australian and Vietnamese stakeholders in the smart and sustainable cities context.
