How can Australia’s container deposit experience help Vietnam?

Australia has implemented a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) across all states and territories, offering a 10-cent refund for each eligible beverage container returned. Under the current scheme, beverage suppliers fund it through a product stewardship model, in which the beverage industry is made responsible for the lifecycle of its products.

In this article, AVPI Fellow Peter Dwyer shares a reflective piece on how Australia’s container deposit experience could support Vietnam’s plastic crisis. Drawing on his time in the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc, he explores how a village-based collection system could help prevent plastic bottles from polluting Vietnam’s waterways and beaches.
